I know, I know. This picture is very unkind, but you can bet she didn't get to this point by eating a healthy diet. I got it sent to me today with the caption "it's almost time to show the belly button again". Can you imagine the bathing suit? At least she's getting the sunshine I'll talk about, but really missed on the sugar part.
Well, how could someone let themselves go this far without doing something about it? You read all the time that one of the most "sinister" aspects of sugar is that it not only wreeks havoc with your insulin levels, which will stop any weight loss dead in it's tracks, but that it triggers a reaction that makes you crave more and more food containing sugar.
Unfortunately, if you shop the center of the grocery store, virtually everything you buy - crackers, cookies, candy, most packaged meals, cereals and breads, etc. - all contain either high fructose corn syrup, refined corn syrup, sucrose or cane sugar. If you shop the produce area you can find nature's alternative to refined sugar in the form of fructose or fruit sugar. Fructose produces a much slower insulin reaction in the body, and eaten in moderation (not three apples at a time), will diminish the sweet cravings and be a much healthier option.
Does this mean you can never have sugar again? No, but you'd be better off if you limit sweet treats to special occasions, like birthdays or parties, and eat them in moderation. To get more information and learn why all diets fail in the long run Click Here!
Let's switch to "sunshine" - something we don't get much of in NE Ohio. You'll want to ignore the medical communities war on sunshine when you hear the results of studies done at the University of San Diego, a university in Nebraska, a Swedish study, and a study released in Anticancer Research.
Here's the summary:
Looking at rates of breast cancer in 107 countries, those closest to the equator had the lowest risk factors. The data shows that regardless of other risk factors like smoking and being overweight, women who live closer to the equator have higher levels of vitamin D, the "sunshine" vitamin, in their bloodstream.
Swedish scientists found that men who already had prostate cancer were 7 times less likely to die if they got enough vitamin D.
Scientists found that vitamin D has the potential to lower the risks of all cancers in women by 77%.
How much sunshine do you need? If you are fair skinned you need about 20 minutes of sunlight exposure a day, and if you're darker skinned you need two to four times that amount. If you can't get that much sun in your busy schedule you can ramp up vitamin D through diet by adding salmon, sardines, tuna, eggs, beef liver and swiss cheese. That's a lot for today, but important stuff. Please add your comments!!
