All Calories Aren't The Same! For Weight Loss You Need To Know The Difference.

Good Friday Morning,

I just read an article from nutritionist and author Isabel De Los Rios from her book, The Diet Solution

This just makes great common sense. She says that All calories aren't the same. The theory that "it's all about the calories stupid" just doesn't stand up to science.

Most of the calories we consume from processed foods like sweets, candies, crackers with high hydrogenated fat, chips, etc. are sent immediately to our fat stores. They screw up our natural insulin levels and reek havoc with a weight loss program because our body wants more.

Certain foods, like natural meats, raw nuts, fruits and vegetables, good fats and certain oils, will cause an elevated metabolic response in the body and actually help burn off more calories.

She has three ideas to help figure out this "good calorie, bad calorie" issue.

1. Stop counting calories. Don't buy 100 calorie snack packs from the grocery store because you think it's only 100 calories. These snack foods usually are high in sugar and processed chemicals that both contribute to weight gain.

2. Focus on portion size. One of the key principles of any weight loss program is not only eating the right foods, but eating the right portion size of the right foods. The typical rule of thumb is that if the food can fit in the palm of your hand, it's probably close to the right portion size.

3. Don't get sucked in by the "Low Cal" product claims at the store. Again, all calories aren't the same. In reality most "low cal" products are worse because they contain so many artificial sweeteners and chemical that they may cause more weight gain than the normal varieties.

The real key concept here that Isabel promotes is what you've heard consistently through my weight loss journey - let's switch from the calorie mentality to the "healthy food portion" mentality. This common sense approach is what will keep your weight loss program on track.

Have a great weekend and don't forget to pass your comments along.
